Founded by Michael Legasse and carried forward by his son Jeremy. Today we deliver more than 15,000 service visits a year across an 80-mile radius from our shop in Brewer.
A hardware store in Brewer, and a better idea for lawn care
Green Thumb Lawn Service was founded by Michael Legasse. Michael's path started behind the counter of a hardware store in north Brewer, where he spent enough time talking to homeowners to see there was a real need for reliable, professional lawn care in the area. A forestry graduate from the University of Maine, he had the plant-science background to do the work right and the work ethic to build a company around it.
The business started small with a mowing service, then grew. As Michael added turf health and pest management, those divisions took off. Eventually he sold the mowing division to a local landscaper and put all of his focus into the care side: feeding the soil, managing pest pressure, and keeping Maine lawns healthy through a full season.
Jeremy Legasse started at Green Thumb in 1991, his freshman year at Brewer High School. His older brother Derek was already working at the company, and together the two of them (along with a rotating group of their Brewer High friends) spent their high school and college summers on the trucks. They grew up in the business, learning the work from Michael and the older technicians, and quite a few of those high school friends stayed on into their adult careers.
Those years also saw the services expand. Customers kept asking for help beyond turf and pest management: hydroseeding new or damaged lawns, caring for ornamental trees and shrubs, and managing vegetation along driveways, fence lines, and commercial right-of-ways. Green Thumb added those divisions as the demand grew. Eventually Derek carved out his own path, first going independent with soil preparation and hydroseeding, and later transitioning his company to focus specifically on tree and plant health care under the name Arbor Armor. We still work alongside Derek on shared customers.
Green Thumb Lawn Service is led today by Jeremy, Michael's son, carrying forward the same family principles Michael built the company on. Between Jeremy's 35+ years in the business and Derek's parallel career in tree and plant health, the Legasse family has four decades of hands-on Maine lawn and landscape experience to draw from. Jeremy's focus is keeping the family-oriented culture intact, building a team that supports each other, and delivering the kind of service this company was known for from day one.
The next generation is already here. Jeremy's oldest daughter now works at Green Thumb full time and is one of the friendly voices you hear when you call the office. Three generations of Legasses in 40 years, and counting.
