Fire Ant Treatment & Management

Same thing, different word. People search for "fire ant control" or "fire ant treatment" and what they want is to stop getting stung in their own yard. We call it management because on MDI these colonies are established across the area, not just on one property. Our four-visit bait program brings the population down at the source season after season, rather than knocking back the workers you can see and watching the colony rebuild in a few weeks.

No. Maine's European Imported Fire Ant (Myrmica rubra) is a different species from the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) that causes problems in the South. The European species is smaller and less aggressive, but the stings are still painful and the colonies can build to large numbers on a property.

The good news: our species does not form the massive mounds you see in southern fire ant photos. The colonies are usually hidden under stones, mulch, logs, or garden bed edges.

European Imported Fire Ant is most heavily established on Mount Desert Island and the surrounding Downeast coastal communities. They have been documented in other parts of Maine as well, but MDI is the area where homeowners encounter them most often.

If you are on or near MDI and you are getting unexpected stings in your landscape, fire ants are a strong possibility.

Sharp burning at the moment of the sting, followed by a small raised welt that can itch for several hours. Some people develop a small white pustule at the sting site over the next day. Severe allergic reactions are rare but possible.

Multiple stings happen quickly when a nest is disturbed because the workers swarm. Wear closed shoes when working in landscape beds, mulch, or anywhere fire ant activity has been seen.

Our bait products are selected for a favorable profile around people and pets when used as intended. The bait is placed in targeted zones around the landscape rather than broadcast across the whole property, which limits exposure.

We will tell you specifically what was placed where after each visit, and you can keep pets out of treated zones until the bait has been carried into the colony (typically 24 to 48 hours).

Bait works slower than a contact treatment but more thoroughly. The workers carry the bait back into the colony where it reaches the queen. Visible reduction in ant activity usually starts within 2 to 3 weeks of the first treatment.

Full population suppression takes the four-visit season. Properties with established fire ant pressure should expect to be on this program for multiple seasons because the species is established across the area, not just on individual properties.

Visible nests are usually a small fraction of the actual colony. Mound treatments kill the workers on the surface but rarely reach the queen, which means the population rebuilds within weeks.

Bait works because the workers spread the active ingredient throughout the colony. That is why we use a bait program rather than spot mound treatments.
