pH Management

Most Maine soils are naturally acidic. When the pH drops too low, grass stops responding to fertility because the nutrients literally cannot reach the roots. Lime is how we fix that.

Why it matters

Fertilizer lock-up and the acidic Maine soil problem

When soil pH drops below about 6.0, the nutrients in fertilizer become chemically unavailable to grass roots. You can feed the lawn all year and it will still look tired. This is called fertilizer lock-up, and it is the most common reason a fertility program stops showing results on Maine lawns.

Lime raises the pH and unlocks the nutrients that are already there. It also promotes microbial activity, which helps break down thatch, increases root development, and supports overall turf density. Think of lime as the service that makes every other service on the lawn work.

How the service works

Spring and fall lime treatments, timed to your soil

We do not put lime on every lawn by default. We put it on the ones that actually test acidic, at the rate that specific property needs.

Soil pH test first

A quick pH test tells us whether a lawn actually needs lime and at what rate. Guessing is expensive. Testing is honest.

Spring and fall treatments

Lime works its way into the soil over weeks, not days. Fall treatment sets up next spring. Spring treatment starts working through the growing season.

Unlocks the nutrients already there

Many Maine lawns have plenty of nutrients locked up by low pH. Lime does not add new nutrients, it makes the existing ones available again.

Microbial activity and thatch

Balanced pH encourages the beneficial microbes that break down thatch naturally. Less thatch means deeper roots and denser turf over time.

The questions we hear most about lime treatment and soil pH on Maine lawns.

How do I know if my Maine lawn needs lime?

A soil pH test is the only way to know for sure. We do these as part of our walkthrough on properties where we suspect acidic soil. Visual cues that often correlate with low pH: moss moving in, lawn looks tired despite steady fertility, slow spring green-up, persistent thatch layer that does not break down, yellowing in established turf.

Most Maine soils run acidic naturally because of our climate and tree cover. A meaningful percentage of the lawns we walk would benefit from at least one lime treatment.

Pelletized vs. powdered lime — which is better?

We use pelletized lime almost exclusively. The pellets are easier to apply evenly, do not blow around or stick to wet shoes, and break down into the soil with normal rainfall over a few weeks. Powdered (or 'pulverized') lime works faster but is messy to apply and easily lost to wind drift.

Both raise pH the same way chemically. The pellet form just makes the process cleaner.

How often should lime be applied?

It depends on starting pH and soil type. Most Maine lawns need a lime treatment every 2 to 3 years to maintain a healthy pH range. Properties with heavy clay soils or significant tree cover may need more frequent treatment.

We retest pH periodically rather than putting lime down on a fixed calendar. Lime is not something every lawn needs every year, and over-liming is its own problem.

Will lime hurt nearby plants or shrubs?

Lime raises pH gradually over weeks. Most ornamental plants and shrubs tolerate the small pH shift it causes around lawn application zones. Acid-loving plants (rhododendron, azalea, blueberry, holly, hydrangea where you want blue flowers) prefer the soil left alone, so we keep lime away from those bed areas.

How long until lime starts working?

Lime moves slowly into the soil. You will start to see effects in 4 to 6 weeks for surface conditions, and the full pH adjustment happens over several months. Fall lime treatment sets up the spring growing season; spring lime works through the summer.

This is why we recommend it as part of an ongoing program rather than a one-time cleanup.

Can lime be applied with fertilizer at the same time?

Yes, in most cases. Lime and most fertilizers can be applied on the same visit without conflict. We typically time them together when the property needs both, which is more efficient and lets the homeowner stay off the lawn for one window instead of two.
